WHAT THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT · SHARE OF BAD REVIEWS
Price and subscription50%

3 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ This is a very outdated system, which is surprising given the high price.
★★★★★ First give me a sample of performance and quality and then I can decide if it's worthy the money.
★★★★★ A good app to waste money on resubscribe and get nothing in return except for the sections that where already free.
WHAT THEY ASK FOR
  • I wish I could have a trisl of how this app works but there's no way to know. 1★, Jun 8, 2025
  • I have a feature request though: for words with many characters, it would be nice to have multiple boxes on the screen at the same time (one per character), rather than inputting each character into the same box. 5★, Jul 21, 2024
  • I do have a feature request. 5★, Feb 11, 2024
  • Feature request for developers: please add WaniKani API integration! 5★, Jun 2, 2023
  • This app needs a more customizable SRS to it, more like Anki or most other Flashcards apps. 5★, Mar 13, 2022
  • the real kicker is: if you add a bunch of words but forget to save your list, and Skritter gets restarted before you come back to it, then all the words you just added are lost. 3★, Dec 29, 2020

Useful, it helps31%

9 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ Writing training is why I got it, and I've found it helpful, though not perfect (possible to register clearly wrong writing as correct.).
★★★★★ I know writing the kanji is so helpful in remembering them vs just grinding flashcards.
★★★★★ Overall, this is an awesome app and compliments apps such as Pimsleur which helps with conversational language speaking.
Easy to use14%

4 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ - please create a streak freeze or other way to restore your streak so that it's not as easy to lose your streak if you forget to practice one day.
★★★★★ Great tool and resource, very easy to use.
★★★★★ I love how the design of the app is simple and it's very plug and play.
Fun, addictive14%

4 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ I enjoy both Chinese and Japanese versions of the app and use them religiously 😀
★★★★★ It's fun too and even if you don't care about being able to write, this will still set you down the right path
★★★★★ I also really enjoy the writing experience, and the testing and time attack options.
Worth the money10%

3 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ Definitely worth every penny.
★★★★★ Even though the app tries to get you to be a paid monthly subscriber, you can skip and first start learning your hiragana, katakana, and beginning kanji decks for free.
★★★★★ Aside from that, I appreciate the selection of free lessons that are available.

Pacing needs to be fixed

After going through most of the katakana lessons at a reasonable pace (about 5 characters per lesson), the app wants you to learn 43 words in one sitting for the final lesson. Bizarre. It then assigns over 150 cards for a review session, versus the usual 15-30ish. Overall a decent app but the poor pacing is a real issue that seems like the devs could easily fix

The most I pay for any app

This is the most expensive app I pay for … and I like it! I’m probably a corner case in terms of a user, as I’m fluent in Japanese and can read regular novels, write business emails etc without problem. However, ask me to write the same kanji by hand… and I turn into elementary level. Since I can already read the N1 kanji, this has been a super effective way to add handwriting. Highly recommended.

Good. Could be great.

The subscription model is fair. The srs works well. Writing training is why I got it, and I’ve found it helpful, though not perfect (possible to register clearly wrong writing as correct.). I think I would find it all much more useful, enough to keep a paid subscription going longer, if there were example sentences. Several power word/character, ideally.

A little disappointed

I used Skritter many years ago, and love the idea of a self-contained SRS that tests written recall. I’m a little surprised that it does not seem to have been improved at all since I last used it. I’m only about 100 kanji in this time around, and have already found errors on common kanji. This is supposed to be a mature app, so errors in stroke count or order are totally unacceptable. I also find it a bit shocking that no features have been added since the old days. I cannot search for kanji or vocab in the app. I cannot add words through the app. This is a very outdated system, which is surprising given the high price.

Seems like a scam

Useless. It doesn’t let you try anything without paying. First give me a sample of performance and quality and then I can decide if it’s worthy the money. It also doesn’t have much textbooks to choose from on their library. Only the basic Genki o Minna no Nihongo. I wish I could have a trisl of how this app works but there’s no way to know.

Store description

Practice Japanese writing with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Japanese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start. Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback, which allows us to create what we think is the best Japanese writing app out there! Japanese writing uses three different scripts; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Skritter offers all three and you can learn them through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty. Deck examples: - Survival Japanese (for traveling in Japan) - Food and drinks (learn to understand the menus at your favorite Japanese restaurant with delicious sushi, ramen, and other dishes) - Cultural topics like Samurai Japanese - More advanced topics like foreign policy - And many more… First, you learn a character’s meaning, then practice drawing it and before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters, and words like these two happy users: “If I could only keep one app on my iPod, this would be it without a doubt. Skritter will change your life!” ― Wendy Werneth, UN Translator “Learning to write characters has never been so fun. From writing zero to 2000+ characters in six months!” ― Brian Jackson, Economist Have questions, problems, or feedback? We would love to hear from you. Reach out to us at team@skritter.com --------------------------------- Guest accounts enjoy free access to select decks forever! Unlock Review mode, and study anything you want with a premium subscription, which is available for purchase in the app. Big savings offered on 12-month subscriptions! • One month subscription (automatically renewed until canceled) • 12-month subscription (automatically renewed until canceled) Recurring billing, cancel anytime. Within 24 hours before the subscription period ends, you will be charged through your iTunes account. Manage your subscription from your iTunes App Store settings where you can turn off auto-renewal at any time. Any unused portion of a free trial period, if offered, will be forfeited when the user purchases a subscription to that publication, where applicable.
