WHAT THEY ASK FOR
  • Maybe add like a feature where you can add the font that's used in mainland China so you can get used to it, cause it's kinda difficult adapting. 5★, Jul 19, 2026
  • I do wish there was a social function to see how my friends and family are progressing in the app. 5★, Jun 27, 2026
  • But it is missing some things it really should have. 5★, Feb 26, 2026
  • For example, every character should have at least one, ideally multiple sentence examples. 5★, Feb 26, 2026
  • I wish I could comment about the quality of the app itself and its ability to help in my Chinese studies. 1★, Jun 11, 2024
  • I wish there were a smart system of clash cards that did a spaced repetition (like PLECO). 5★, Jan 21, 2024
  • Great app but please give us the ability to change the font because foreign characters can look very different in a serif font. 5★, Dec 29, 2023
  • I wish they're was a Pleco integration because Pleco is where I search all my new words. 5★, Dec 3, 2023

My New Favorite

If you’re learning to write characters, the iPad interface and an Apple Pencil works really well, and their library of decks matched to an almost ridiculous number of various textbooks and resources is amazing, as well as having their own courses. I also like that they emphasize learning the tones. My only gripe, on the web version, when quizzing for pinyin, you can type the answer, but you seem to be on the honor statement in the iOS app.

Best app for learning and retaining Chinese characters

This is the best app for learning and remembering Chinese characters. I don’t like writing reviews, but I figured I’d throw the folks at Skritter a bone. I so appreciate this program and can attest to its incomparable capacity to teach a high volume of characters in very little time. Thank you Skritter. I love you.

Annoying visual update

The functionality has usually been good, but the recent visual update is unpleasant—now there’s only two higher-contrast options.

well planned for long term

I just started but it feels very well planned for the long term study of Mandarin. I've used other apps and was surprised that they abruptly ended at A2. I feel this app can take you to HSK 3 & beyond. I'll update my review after a year.

Underrated app

For learning to read and write Hanzi, this is the best app Ive found. Paired with readers from Du Chinese or other apps, Skritter has been amazing for actually retaining new characters. Some of the decks that other users have created are just amazing for learning characters in an optimal order instead of just following HSK. Spaced repetitions, writing practice, and most importantly for me, even decks that were uploaded with simplified characters automatically become available in traditional! This is an amazing feature. Most apps support both character sets, but most of them do not auto-translate from one to the other when it’s user-uploaded content. This is a huge benefit.

Store description

Practice Chinese writing with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Chinese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start. Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback which allows us to create what we think is the best Chinese writing app out there! If you have seen Chinese writing before, you probably noticed that it requires us to learn characters rather than the roman alphabet we know from English. You can learn it through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty. Popular Decks: - Ordering or making coffee or tea (so you can get your morning caffeine fix) - Chinese Stroke Order - HSK 1-6 & New HSK3.0 1-9 study decks - More advanced topics like Yoga and talking about your Emotions - The 16-episode Ultimate Chinese Character course First, you learn a character’s meaning, reading, and tone; then practice writing it! Before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters, and words like these two happy users: “If I could only keep one app on my iPod, this would be it without a doubt. Skritter will change your life!” ― Wendy Werneth, UN Translator “Learning to write characters has never been so fun. From writing zero to 2000+ characters in six months!” ― Brian Jackson, Economist Try our app and see for yourself why thousands of people use it every day. Have questions, problems, or feedback? We would love to hear from you. Reach out to us at team@skritter.com ----------- Guest accounts enjoy free access to select decks forever! Unlock Review mode, and study anything you want with a premium subscription, which is available for purchase in the app. Big savings offered on 12-month subscriptions! • One month subscription (automatically renewed until canceled) • 12-month subscription (automatically renewed until canceled) Recurring billing, cancel anytime. Within 24 hours before the subscription period ends, you will be charged through your iTunes account. Manage your subscription from your iTunes App Store settings where you can turn off auto-renewal at any time.
