C-MAP: Boating

BEWARE. NOT TRUSTWORTHY. I’ve used this app for years with no glitches. Now, in October 2026, it failed while underway and would not obtain a fix. A day later, after multiple fresh downloads and restarting my IPhone 17, it is still a dud. Before failing, it began reporting poor GPS reception. Then-nothing. But All other location apps work fine( OnX, Google Maps and more). There are better apps.

C-Map. Paying customer here. Navigation app. Wickedly unreliable insofar as keeping my boat icon on the map. You know, so I can see where I am. iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro, iPad mini, latest. The map cartography, is the prettiest map rendering in the galaxy. But whatever team is doing the boat positioning, they are shocking poor at their day jobs. How can you have a navigation app that cannot show the boat position. And/or if you close the app and re-launch, icon appears for a few seconds then disappears. Or even, I was just watching it, go backwards. It’s crazy because it knows live my speed over ground, in my heading. Those numbers continuously update so clearly the app knows the data. And also if you keep tapping the location crosshairs icon, the map centers where you are - yet no boat is rendered. For any kind of casual, not standing at boat chart plotter helper-navigation tool, this app is worthless in its present form because it’s so brutally unreliable. It’s been like this all summer! It’s almost like this app, in terms of location, is intentionally bad. I don’t know why. Why on earth would you make a navigation app for boaters, sell it to them, then not show where their boat is? I feel bad for the mapping cartography team. They put so much beautiful care into the way the map is presented. Stunningly pretty. But we do need to know where we are. Even fails on my brand new iPhone 18 Pro. This review is live from a sailboat on a 10 hour run in British Columbia. This app should be sold as frame-able wall art, not as a navigation aid for boaters.

Once it gets stuck in the Settings screen only remedy is to reinstall the app. Also no headings on a leg of a planned route. Pretty much useless for planning a route as not reliable.

Would be great if the app didn't constantly crash.

I’ve been using this app for several years now. Over the last year it’s been very glitchy. The app will shut down randomly, then not want to restart. Then the app charts keep defaulting make to metric depth measurements even though I have feet selected. Lastly, it doesn’t want to talk to my NSS9 Evo3 most of the time to share routes. Both my Simrad, c-map apps and my iPhone 16 pro max are up to date.

Crashes all the time. Waste of money
