Lost data, sync, backup35%

26 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Yesterday Simplenote on my MacBook Air and Android phone quit synching.
★★★★★ I will update this review to four or five stars once there is an export or back-up feature on the Mac version. It's ridiculous that you want us to use your app to save our data, but you don't give us a simple way to…
★★★★★ I really lost a lot of time, so 2 stars.
Bugs, things not working22%

16 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Have used Simplenote for a long time and now it doesn't work.
★★★★★ having to “Sign up” just makes me think this app fails entirely without a 'net connection.
★★★★★ Registration doesn't work at all, and I say this with complete confidence, I sent an email to the post office for three days.
Crashes and freezes20%

15 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ It's newly unstable, crashes immediately with an exception report.
★★★★★ Simplenote keeps crashing, even after updating my software.
★★★★★ I've been using simplenote for the better part of a decade and have loved it, but it constantly freezes on Sequoia, and I've had to resort to using the web app instead.
No customer support15%

11 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Nothing in their support.
★★★★★ Was using the app on a daily basis and really liked the markdown support and sharing options, one day a majority of my notes just disappeared and never came back.
★★★★★ I use to be able to copy things from a terminal window and paste. Now if I copy more than one line, it crashes SimpleNote. 100% reproducable. Something to do with how it pasts carriage returns/line breaks. The iOS…
Login and account problems14%

10 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Hate any app that requires me to “signup” at some random web site to use it on my Mac.
★★★★★ why does it need me to log in...
★★★★★ App forcing you to create an account, and does not accept any password.
Worse after an update14%

10 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ I will update this review to four or five stars once there is an export or back-up feature on the Mac version.
★★★★★ Simplenote keeps crashing, even after updating my software. It uses to be fine.
★★★★★ This app has always worked flawlessly until very recently. Now It will not open, or if it does, there's some sort of memory loop because it hangs and beach-balls.
Missing features12%

9 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ The minor issues is the lack of support for rtf (fonts, tables,...) and small attachments (images, etc).
★★★★★ Once you put it in here, get ready to copy and paste it out the old fashioned way, because you can't share it to anything else to manipulate it further.
★★★★★ In the picture it looks like the font size is nice and large, but on a large monitor it is tiny and there seems to be no way to increase the size.
Wrong or poor results9%

7 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Markup is the most unnecessary, useless, and featureless mark up language.
★★★★★ Absolutely useless app, it has absolutely nothing: no styling options, no attachments, no shortcuts, absolutely nothing.
★★★★★ It's for this reason that this app is absolutely useless for me.
WHAT THEY ASK FOR
  • so annoying why do i need an account for everything 1★, Apr 15, 2024
  • I wish they supported Dropbox so I dont have to depend on their server. 2★, Jun 2, 2021
  • • If you need any sort of text formatting, you're out of luck. 4★, Feb 6, 2021
  • this is more of a suggestion, but i REALLY wish you could bold, italicize, and underline; i know some other notes apps have it, and it's one of the biggesy (and really only) drawbacks to simplenote. 3★, Jan 12, 2020
  • Great, but please add the ability to underline, make bold, and italicize text. 4★, Sep 23, 2019
  • Bonus power move if you use Pocket: create a note in Simplenote, publish it, and add the URL to Pocket. 5★, Oct 16, 2018
  • Being able to do lists and tables would be nice. 2★, Oct 2, 2018
  • Then you need a “simple note taking” app for keeping more basic notes, where you don't need tons of formatting options, or anything complex. 5★, Sep 3, 2018

★★★★★ Excellent, simple, can handle massive copy paste blocks.
★★★★★ i've been using simplenote for about 7-8 years now, and i will recommend it to anyone who asks for a simple notetaking app.
★★★★★ First: Simplenote is simple.
Looks great24%

42 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ For me, SimpleNote is exactly what I wanted: Checklists, tagged notes, cross platform compatibility, streamlined interface, dark mode.
★★★★★ Collaborate shows as a note context menu (ellipsis) option but there's no UI for it, it's still implemented as an email address in the tag UI.
★★★★★ Pros • Super simple, clean, intuitive interface.
Fast19%

32 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ It's always been a lean and effective app with quick syncing updates.
★★★★★ Aug 2020, v 1.1.2: WOW what an update, includes 'untagged notes', new search engine that's fast and more accurate.
★★★★★ Plus, this thing syncs notes FAST.
Worth the money11%

19 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ Usually when I write a FREE app about a problem I don't even get a reply, but Simple Note was immediately engaged in solving my problem and continued to work on it for me until it was solved.
★★★★★ The fact that it saves backups of all your notes as you make changes to them – and for free – is awesome.
★★★★★ But, for a free app, it's been a pleasurable and profitable experience.

★★★★★ • Sidebar with all notes in a list is useful, tagging is useful.

Used to be great

Simplenotes was my go to notes for several years. It was great but is no longer under development. Yesterday Simplenote on my MacBook Air and Android phone quit synching. It’s time for me to move on from it.

★★★★★Jul 2, 2026
I tried to open it, but

I got stuck in endless trials to identify objects - so many I gave up. The pictures were often dark and hard to see …. Silly

Equally as many problems as the built in notes

My problem with the built in notes app was that it does too much auto formatting and keeping unwanted links. This app does the exact same thing. I don’t know why a simple notepad can’t be created.

Long Time User

I’ve been using Simplenote for about 9 years now, and so sorry, only got a round to reviewing it now (March 2026). So - I use it almost every day. I’m just a guy, not a student or researcher, but it does a great job at transferring shopping lists to my wife’s phone if we share the same accounts on our phones. It works on other platforms - google phone / MacBook / browsers. Love it, thanks

Mystery App

If I can’t figure out how to do something in less than five minutes, it goes to the trash. Took me no time to figure out Joplin, but that app behaves a bit funky for me. But it’s better than “SIMPLEnote”. Your results may vary.

★★★★★Sep 7, 2025
Backup? Export?

I will update this review to four or five stars once there is an export or back-up feature on the Mac version. It’s ridiculous that you want us to use your app to save our data, but you don’t give us a simple way to be safe. Irresponsible.
