Keycap: Mechanical Keyboard

No release notes.

Every key you press, on a real mechanical keyboard. Keycap sits in your menu bar and plays a genuine switch recording the instant you press a key — in any app, in any text field. Laptop keyboard, low-profile, membrane, or an external board you already like: give it the sound you actually want. THIRTEEN SWITCHES, ALL INCLUDED NovelKeys Creams, Holy Pandas, Alpacas, Turquoise Tealios, Gateron Black Inks, Gateron Red Inks, Cherry MX Blacks, Cherry MX Browns, Cherry MX Blues, Kailh Box Navies, IBM Buckling Spring, SKCM Blue Alps and Topre. Six ship with the app; the rest download free from the built-in library. IT SOUNDS LIKE A REAL BOARD Every switch is recorded row by row, so the number row rings higher than the space bar, exactly as it does on a real keyboard. Space, enter and backspace have their own recordings. Pressing and releasing are separate sounds. Hold a key down and it does not machine-gun. HEAR IT BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A typing test is built in. Type a line of shuffled words, hear the switch in context, and watch your words per minute and accuracy climb as you go. Or click any switch in the grid to hear it instantly. A LIBRARY THAT KEEPS GROWING New switch packs arrive from a free online library — no app update, no extra charge. Everything in Keycap is included in the one-time price. No subscription and no in-app purchases, ever. BUILT FOR PRIVACY Keycap asks for Input Monitoring, and it is worth knowing exactly what that does and does not mean: • It only listens. macOS hands it a read-only copy of the event. It cannot modify, block or inject a keystroke. • It reads a position, not a letter. All it takes from an event is which physical key moved, so it can pick one of twelve sounds. It never assembles characters, so it cannot tell the letters of your password from anything else you type. • Nothing is written down. No keystroke is stored, logged or sent anywhere. There is no history to leak, because nothing is ever kept. • macOS keeps it sandboxed, and its only network use is downloading the sound packs you choose. • You can turn the permission off whenever you like. Keycap keeps working — it just goes quiet. SET IT AND FORGET IT • Volume, right there in the menu bar • Release sounds on or off • Launch at login • Hide the Dock icon and live in the menu bar instead • Change switches without leaving what you are doing REQUIREMENTS macOS 14 or later. Works with any keyboard — built in, Bluetooth or wired. Keycap is an independent app. Switch names are used to describe the sound of each recording; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any keyboard or switch manufacturer.
