Bugs, things not working50%

12 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Stopped working with newest updates everything is crashing
★★★★★ Normally if touch ID fails the third time, the system presents entering your device code.
★★★★★ That doesn't work either.
Lost data, sync, backup38%

9 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Opened app one day to randomly have no codes inside, thank god I had backups in other authenticator apps. Be careful…
★★★★★ On all platforms (for me, iOS and Mac) the codes are deleted constantly.
★★★★★ If, like me, you prefer to keep all your data on device and not sync to any cloud accounts, beware that you will not be able to transfer your codes from an old device to a new device.
Login and account problems21%

5 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ You must log into your account.
★★★★★ No auto-sort, although one can drag the entries on macOS and edit in an account name in the Title.
★★★★★ I have an existing Proton account.

★★★★★ They are a useless cheap support that doesn't really provide any real support).
★★★★★ Shockingly poor quality from Proton, hopefully no one with epilepsy tries to use this on their iPad.
WHAT THEY ASK FOR
  • Needs a passcode lock option. 4★, Oct 14, 2026
  • It would be great if you added Arabic; it would be the best app in the world. 5★, Jul 28, 2026
  • You open it quick when you need a code, and everything looks straightforward without all the junk. 4★, Apr 15, 2026
  • I have to REIMPORT THEM EVERY TIME I need a code. 2★, Oct 24, 2025
  • Needs a way better ui 4★, Oct 5, 2025
  • my only note is that i wish there was better organizational methods, like organize via Name or Type. 4★, Aug 16, 2025
  • Could you folks add the function to use PIN code (not bio method) to lock/unlock this app? 5★, Aug 15, 2025
  • It sorted randomly, I sorted alphabetically, and then it sorted randomly again…argh 🤬 A sort option that is retained would be nice along with the ability to set a custom icon for those entries where it doesn't… 3★, Aug 2, 2025

WHAT THEY LOVE · SHARE OF GOOD REVIEWS
Looks great22%

14 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ Proton works well, it respects your privacy, and has better features and design.
★★★★★ I have seen another comment on this review page talking about this same design flaw.
★★★★★ I just miss the grainy/noisy grey background UI design, it was removed 😢
Easy to use16%

10 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ You open it quick when you need a code, and everything looks straightforward without all the junk.
★★★★★ I spent a long time looking for a company that could build a secure, easy-to-use authenticator app, and Proton absolutely nailed it.
★★★★★ It's nothing fancy, but I am finally able to get rid of Authy for my Proton login. All my other authenticators are just stored in Proton Pass.
Worth the money11%

7 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ And it's free, and it's privacy-focused.
★★★★★ The privacy side stands out too, especially since it's free.
★★★★★ All are sort of similar, but Proton Auth has some equal or better features, especially for a 1.0 & for free.
Accurate, great results8%

5 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ Proton works well, it respects your privacy, and has better features and design.
★★★★★ Apple Passwords is excellent when biometrics are involved and works well for OTPs, but when it comes to accessing and managing OTP codes, Proton Authenticator is simply easier and more convenient to use.
★★★★★ Works great and is from a trusted company.
Fast5%

3 of the 4 and 5 star reviews.

★★★★★ You open it quick when you need a code, and everything looks straightforward without all the junk.
★★★★★ a quick delete of the duplicate solves it but to the less tech savvy this could cause confusion.
★★★★★ But the UI isn't particularly smooth; it jitters when scrolling.

Very good

Has the features you want without a bunch of bloat. Just works. And it's free, and it's privacy-focused. Proton is a public service✌️💜

★★★★★Oct 14, 2026
A little short

Needs a passcode lock option. I like this better than Microsoft authentication but I don’t like to using biometric locks for all accounts.

★★★★★Oct 11, 2026
Good for what it is

Always good to see a privacy focused product. Moved away from Microsoft Authenticator a while back, I like this product. My only complaint would be that some 2fa apps don’t allow exports (presumably to keep people trapped to that app) but that’s not your fault so yea.

★★★★★Oct 7, 2026
Difficult using

Once downloaded, can’t access any codes

★★★★★Sep 30, 2026
Ehh…

I first saw this and was excited because I know proton is private, so i downloaded it and transferred my codes from Google Authenticator (this is an option in the app to import from Google) but when I looked at the codes they were generating different numbers, tried to use one and it didn’t work. Ok I’ll just delete a code and try to re add it in proton “code not supported”. Good idea but doesn’t currently work.

★★★★★Sep 23, 2026
Terrible

In trying to set this up. You must log into your account. I use this program. Well you can’t do both at the same time. I do not recommend
