HOW SURE ARE WE
Small app: combines its grossing ranks with ratings growth (12 new ratings a month on average since launch). Tested on 418 apps with verified revenue: typically off by about 2.6 times, so the range is wide. Countries we don't track (and Google Play in China, which doesn't exist) aren't included, and neither are ads or web payments. Gross revenue before store fees.

Slow, laggy, battery16%

11 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ It is extremely laggy, seems to make my phone hot every time I use, and is an endless barrage of advertisements.
★★★★★ It's slow to load simple TEXT.
★★★★★ Suspect it is due to ad media not loading properly which is sloppy and poorly tested development.

Price and subscription10%

7 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ The app is useless for the $40/month VIP+ subscription if you signed up online (not the App Store).
★★★★★ A bizarre app in that it does not seem to allow linkage/login to “print + digital” Variety subscription accounts, only Variety subscriptions made via the Apple app store - a ridiculous limitation resulting in inability…
★★★★★ Can't access my premier subscription, keeps crashing and no features to search or filter through the news.
Bugs, things not working9%

6 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ And the search function on the app simply doesn't work.
★★★★★ I couldn't finish an article because the ads kept restructuring the page as they loaded, until the page goes dark and I have to reload it and start over.
★★★★★ I've never once had a link pointing to multimedia content work. I've tried for years while using each then-latest iPhone. App doesn't refresh content predictably or rapidly. Never has. Never able to find where I left…

★★★★★ Variety is my go-to for entertainment news. This update is a big improvement, it's faster, easier and has new features. I love that I can customize my newsfeed.

★★★★★Jul 17, 2026
AWFUL (in giant font)

Each article takes up the full screen when scrolling. The UI is cooked in times of serving — ahem — VARIETY. Just the same five articles and each tab you hit brings you back to the top when you go back to where you can from so you can’t avoid those articles no matter how hard you try. Bring someone new in to design this.

★★★★★Nov 19, 2025
Unsearchable, un-useable

Only a tiny fraction of movie reviews available on the app that are available on a simple Google search of Variety movie reviews. And the search function on the app simply doesn’t work.

★★★★★Aug 29, 2025
Can’t read entire articles

Only the first paragraph/sentence loads. Useless.

Articles Wont Load

★★★★★Aug 27, 2024
Useless

Only the first sentence of every article is displayed. Deleting app. It’s useless now. V
