HOW SURE ARE WE
Not in any grossing chart, so this comes from ratings growth (169 new ratings a month on average since launch): revenue grows with new ratings, more slowly for apps that collect ratings fast. Tested on 418 apps with verified revenue: typically off by about 2 times, and big earners tend to come out low. Countries we don't track (and Google Play in China, which doesn't exist) aren't included, and neither are ads or web payments. Gross revenue before store fees.

WHAT THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT · SHARE OF BAD REVIEWS
Bugs, things not working37%

27 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ When turning on vpn it auto logs out. I understand needing purchases or first log ins to be done without vpns but I should be able to use the app with it.
★★★★★ Everything has a paywall now. Most of the courses won't ever load & I can't access them. I give up with this app & will move on to other chess learning apps. Bye!
★★★★★ Update: they fixed the bug in v2.9.0 with the 2.9.4 update…so I gave the app 2 more stars for that, thank you.
Price and subscription27%

20 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Got the PRO as Trial , but everything cost with Pro as well, u only get a tiny discount.
★★★★★ Everything has a paywall now.
★★★★★ Update 2: greedy chess.com is putting everything behind a paywall now…first they got rid of Short and Sweets, now, in case you haven't noticed, they have gotten rid of free course slots we used to be able to get with…
Login and account problems21%

15 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ i tried to log in i put my gmail and,my username, but it said this account doesn't exist even though i sign up before and it said wrong email even though i didn't forgot.and also it said my password doesn't exist EVEN…
★★★★★ Please fix the bug: I can't login using chess.com, it just keep logging in and it's stuck like that
★★★★★ I purchased courses and I can't even login.
Crashes and freezes18%

13 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Chessable keeps crashing when I'm doing the review puzzles for a book.
★★★★★ Sometimes it just freezes at startup on the Chessable logo.
★★★★★ What's worse is that the app keeps crashing.
Worse after an update12%

9 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ Update 2: greedy chess.com is putting everything behind a paywall now…first they got rid of Short and Sweets, now, in case you haven't noticed, they have gotten rid of free course slots we used to be able to get with…
★★★★★ Unfortunately I recently made the error to update the app (a version that was working just fine) and now the mode trainer is just awful.
★★★★★ UPDATE: keeps crashing when you use the offline mode.
Lost data, sync, backup10%

7 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ App won't allow login of existing account even after being deleted and re-added.
★★★★★ The offline mode is VERY buggy, including synchronization issues and the app's general inability to recognize some downloaded videos in offline mode.
★★★★★ Also I keep getting this Lost Connection screen when the app is trying to save my account.
Missing features10%

7 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ The fact that there is no way to back out of the purchase screen tells me all I need to know to avoid this scam.
★★★★★ Crashing loop that requires you to redownload the app, offline mode doesn't work, and missing features compared to web features (opening tree and engine mode).
★★★★★ Features like “favorite variation” or replay functions are missing, which can hinder learning for those who study on an iOS.
Limits, credits, locked features8%

6 of the 1 and 2 star reviews.

★★★★★ The most obvious fix, since it sounds this a long standing iOS Chessable issue that they haven't fixed, seems like it would be to download the content to my phone but I'd have to pay a monthly fee to download the video…
★★★★★ Also…I still prefer the web version of Chessable because… - this app is so limited… the Dashboard does not display my folders, which I like to keep all my courses organized.
★★★★★ Logged on for the first time in months and all the content I used to have was removed and I have to pay if I want to study it again.
WHAT THEY ASK FOR
  • Just wish you didn't have to pay for a lot of the main openings such as the KIA 5★, Oct 25, 2025
  • This prevented me from accessing the content I had already paid for and downloaded, which should have been available offline. 1★, Nov 7, 2024
  • Ideally, the app should have an in-app verification that allows users to access downloaded content even without an internet connection, especially when it involves paid content. 1★, Nov 7, 2024
  • Love the format of the courses but some UI love for the iPad version would be great. 5★, Nov 4, 2024
  • I wish there was more customization about which things you'd like to review and/or skip 4★, Nov 30, 2023
  • This app needs a lot of work to be approachable, accessible, and overall useful to the wider public. 1★, Sep 3, 2023
  • My request to the developers is to add a text size adjustment in settings, as in other pgn style apps, or make the standard size twice as large. 4★, Mar 26, 2023
  • The only thing I wish to see on chessable is student/teacher Q&A 5★, Sep 5, 2022

My favorite chess app

I have about 15 different applications and/or websites that I use for chess study. Chessable is by far my favorite. I use it every day. Indispensable!

★★★★★Sep 28, 2026
Glacial development

I’ve been using the Chessable app for about 5 years now and I can say that the rhythm in which the developers improve the application is veeery slow. Navigation during review is as bad as in the beginning and for the analysis board they eventually resorted to an awkward integration with the website. The mobile website is actually much better in terms of usability. That’s what I use on a daily basis, but every now and then I come back to check and see where the app is.

Keeps crashing

Chessable keeps crashing when I’m doing the review puzzles for a book. It happens repeatedly, making it very difficult to complete the review and study the material. Please fix this issue—this is a core feature of the app and needs to be reliable.

★★★★★Aug 30, 2026
Costly and poor teaching

The classes for beginners are way complicated without good explanation as to why moves are made. U get a clean chessboard and are supposed to mimic other games… without any explanation. Got the PRO as Trial , but everything cost with Pro as well, u only get a tiny discount. Many YouTubers much better than this

★★★★★Aug 23, 2026
Doesn’t work with vpns

When turning on vpn it auto logs out. I understand needing purchases or first log ins to be done without vpns but I should be able to use the app with it.
