Shazam is virtually useless for classical music

Shazam’s poor recognition of classical music needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. There is little point in being able to identify obscure songs and mediocre tracks if the app cannot reliably recognise classical music. For a music-identification service, that is simply not good enough. Classical music is particularly demanding because the same work may exist in countless different recordings, depending on the orchestra, conductor, soloists, record label and year of recording. That is precisely why Shazam should do more than merely identify the title of a piece. Wherever possible, it should accurately identify and present: • the orchestra performing it, • the conductor, • the specific recording, • the record label, • and the period or year in which it was recorded. Surely this is one of the areas in which Shazam’s music-recognition technology ought to prove its true worth. Classical music should not be an afterthought. If anything, it is one of the genres in which accurate identification matters most. I strongly urge Shazam to improve its classical-music recognition as soon as possible.
