Someone I play pick up pickleball with said I should get the app. So I downloaded it, signed up, and on first launch it presents a pitch to “Upgrade to DUPR+” with “AI-enhanced rating”. Problem is there is no way to dismiss the offer, or say “no thanks.“ I even killed the app and restarted and got the same splash screen. Apparently, the only way to dismiss it is to pay their extortion fee. No thanks, I’ll just keep playing pick up.

I recently got into pickleball. I’ve played for a couple months and have gotten substantially better every week. I sucked originally which gave me a low rating, but now I habitually beat 3.0s and carry every game. No matter who is on my team or who we play my team wins every game in the 3.0 and under matches. Anyway, you can see how many dupr score points you get for winning games and it’s hands down the worst rating system. For example, I’m a 2.4 and my teammate is a 2.9. I’ve played 40 games and he’s played 230. We win and his score goes up .06 and mine goes up .01… I then play against him the next two games and beat him both times. My score goes up .013. I then have another teammate who is a 2.85 and has played 50 games. We win. Mine goes up .011. His goes up .17. These people have played more games than me, have higher rankings, they win when they’re on my team and they lose when they’re against me. Yet my score never goes up. This is the most rudimentary ranking system I’ve ever seen. Oh and by the way they try to force you to pay for a subscription when you join.
